About the Artist – (Mark) Highton-Ridley
“I was first taken by the magic of black and white photography and the alchemy of the wet darkroom as a teenager at school. Now, with digital technology, I can achieve the sorts of images I could see in my mind's eye, but that were beyond the reach of chemical-based photography. With increasing encouragement from the local community of artists, I felt confident enough to go public a couple of years ago and now have a modest following.
“I’m attracted to tone/texture, pattern/perspective and structure/abstraction. When I spot such qualities in everyday scenes and objects, and bring them out in the digital darkroom, it’s like seeing with fresh eyes... there’s beauty to be found in the most unexpected of places.
Prize Draw
“I hope you are drawn to my work and you find something that rouses an inner response, something that you can connect with. If you do, I’d be delighted to hear your comments at photos@highton-ridley.co.uk. Everyone who emails me will be entered in a draw to win the mounted print on display (or a same-sized alternative), to take place at the end of the exhibition (comments may be published).”
The BBC said of Highton-Ridley’s work “His fascination with the black and white genre, interest in perspective and strong lines in his photos, truly shows Plymouth in a striking and arresting light.”

Highton-Ridley is the third artist to be showcased at the Park throughout September and October 2008 with a Meet the Artist event open to all members of the Science Park and the public taking place on Monday 6th October from 4pm-7pm including refreshments.
